The Debate

The long-awaited first debate between President Trump and Joe Biden finally happened. Approx 90 minutes in length, there were no real surprises. So much focus has been given and expectations were high on both sides. For me, there were no real surprises.

Trump and Biden threw jabs back and forth and several times it became personal. Fact-checkers likely could not type fast enough as many blatant lies came out of Biden’s mouth, and frequent “exaggerations” out of Trump’s. Trump certainly appeared to be in command and was aggressive. He was relentless against Biden(as well as Wallace at times) and Biden appeared to be unable to handle it. While Trump struggled during the discussion surrounding the coronavirus, he excelled when talking about Law-and-Order. Trump constantly interrupted Biden and argued with the moderator – Chris Wallace. Biden appeared to be very frail.  Trump was Trump – and Biden was not what he used to be.  As a professional politician Biden should have walked away the clear winner. He did not.

Chris Wallace is being attacked by the Right for taking sides with Biden. It certainly appeared based on a few of the questions asked that he was trying to “get” the President while not asking those same questions to Biden. Wallace also kept using some of Trump’s allotted time asking him questions and interrupting him while Trump spoke.

While Trump struggled during the discussion surrounding the coronavirus, he excelled when talking about Law-and-Order. Overall – the true losers from the debate are the undecided American voters. Trump was not likable and failed to present his beliefs and policies clearly. Biden spoke lies and refused to answer questions directly often being general. Those voters who already have their candidate didn’t have their minds changed.

A couple highlights for me was Trump asking Biden to tell him one law enforcement agency that was supporting Biden. Biden could not provide one. Another is when Biden stated Antifa was not an organization, it was an idea.

Hopefully, during the next debate, Trump can hold back a bit on interrupting and stay focussed on the question and provide clearer answers and information. That may be difficult as Trump will likely be debating not only Biden but the moderator Steve Scully as well.
