My turn…..

Gen 5 Glock – while I have poked fun at Glock’s lack of innovation with their latest offering, upon further review looks like they have made some good improvements. I had a Gen 1 Glock years ago and loved it. It felt like an extension of my arm. Back then I shot at least every week.

Gas Shortage? I am not hearing any mention of an impending gas shortage, however, I am getting information from secondary sources. Several gas stations in my area were out today. Prices have certainly gone up and are expected to rise more.

New Radio – Picked up a QYT KT8900 Dual Band Ham Radio. This will serve as the radio for a “Commo Can” I am building. Basically a somewhat self-contained 2-meter ham radio with charge controller, antenna, and batteries. All will be in an ammo can. An external port will provide different charging methods including solar.  I’ve got the radio, charge controller, ammo can, and solar panel.

Hurricane Irma – Currently a Cat 3. The 5-day tracking projects a path pointing to the southeast United States. Still pretty far away.

Something for you…….

SURVIVAL TIP OF THE DAY: Always carry a Slim Jim with you. Never know when a buddy will lock his keys in his car.

Yep, carry that Slim Jim all the time. That way if you can’t get back in the car, you won’t starve.

I’ve finally gotten my sister to see the sense in prepping. I have a list of items she needs to get on hand for a start. She’s 75, lives here on the “hill” with us. I’ll stock her up.

I think the American public has an attention span of 3 – 5 days. North Korea was the shinny thing for a while and everyone was in a panic. Now it’s hurricane season, so everyone is changing focus. But to me, while the impact of a hurricane is devastating, it doesn’t compare to a nuc dropping in to your neighborhood. Prep for the hurricane sure. But don’t forget the long term threats.

One of the threats to my location is the rail road about 3 miles east of me. The other night, there was a really pungent odor in the air. My sister is convinced it was from a tank car on the rails as the train came thru.

I have my fall garden coming together. Turnips, broccoli, rutabaga, cabbage and collards. Plus have the seeds for an edible pod winter pea coming from a seed supplier who has heirloom seeds. Ought to be a decent garden this fall.

Finally picked all of the egg plant, bell pepper and poblano peppers. Must have left the poblano’s on the bush too long. Had some last night and really had to have a lot to drink with them.

BTW, with the aftermath of Harvey, you can not only expect gasoline to spike in price, but building materials will become scare and the price will go up considerably. Plywood sheathing, OSB, sheet rock, 2 x 4 studs, roofing felt, roofing shingles, building wrap and insulation….all of this is going to be in high demand. If you have any DIY projects it would be wise to get the material now. I intend to get 3/4″ oak plywood for cabinetry I’m working on and just store it. Plus sheathing and OSB for general repair work is part of my prepping, so I’ll resupply my store there also. I should be good to go with the 2 x 4’s.

Oren, Thanks for the reminder re the building supplies. Also most probably every
place that sells prep.foods- MREs etc will be bought up by the Gov. At least people who work in these fields will do well for awhile. Lightning

Completed AR pistol build, stores nicely in the truck, which is preferable to broken down AR. Added two incubators, added 15 more chickens.. various types. I like gadgets, the wife likes chickens.. could be worse. Due to have a big chicken killin soon, to weed out the non-layers and some roosters. fall tomatoes and peppers in. added food, and will need to expand storage for food now. Started the ball rolling on going full solar and selling energy back to the grid, which I can now do. Any of you folks done that ? got any lessons learned ? I’ve got minor solar now (5 panels to play with).. I did get cable and started fabbing my cables to ties 25 AGM batters together .. tests are working so far.
Added solar lights to out buildings and critter cages. Hatched some baby quail.. 50 ish left .. a bunch got out .. due to a name less person.. try to help by feeding them.. you have to LOCK it as well a close it.
I think the public attention span is deliberately limited. Imagine what woudl happen if you reported the same thing every day because it never got fixed. You might actually start asking why and electing different people.. go figure.
Work hard. rest when you must, but don’t ever quit on yourself.

Our local gas has gone up 30 cents since Wednesday, but I’m not getting any information from the source as to any shortages.

I salvaged a heavy-duty shelving unit from work that I plan to stuff in our spare closet and fill with canned goods. It’s been in storage for months now, and every time I saw it there I kept imagining it at home, filled with preps. I just happened to be outside today when the guys started hauling it to the dumpster, and I think I scared them a bit when I jumped in front of them and started waving my hands and yelling. Now I just have to figure out how to haul it home…

Looks like my mom in Fl might get hit by Irma. Also, lots of people here on Cape Cod watched Houston with alarm since we are way overdue and even a Cat 3 here would destroy the place, overbuilt on coast, and probably kill a bunch of folks, no where to go. Storm surge would take out my house, useless to prep for except have a rubber raft and life preservers if I mess up. Will bite the bullet and look into flood insurance like everyone is doing here, hard to get and $$$. Best strategy is evacuate several days before they know it will hit here and stay at a motel inland. Need to go over the bridge, which would be backed up a dozen miles on DDayand closed when wind hits 70 mph…uh, hurricane level, stranding everyone here anyway. Big enough hurricane could conceivably surge over Cape from south to north of whole island in some areas. Can always come back if in error and will have valuables with me. Going to seriously have Bob bags packed with everything except stuff in current use. Houston was wake up call.

Spoke to a friend of mine that works for the refinery in Tulsa Ok. He said its bad right now 60% of the gas production is shut down. He told me Motiva that produces 600k barrels of fuel is running at 30% and Exxon is shut down. All the contractors that had been hired to do retro fits at existing refineries are all now in Houston. So their refinery that needed repairs is now on their own and the other issue is all fuel that is in holding tanks is now contaminated and all the raw materials are contaminated, he told me expect in the weeks to come high prices and he said there is no fuel being made that would even put a dent in the consumption that we do on a daily basis.
