Saturday’s – “What on your mind?”

Here is a place to share things you’ve been thinking about lately. What kind of things?

  • Recent accomplishments in preparedness.
  • Projects being worked on.
  • Thoughts on world events.
  • Recent purchases & recommendations
  • Current events related to politics, terrorism, crime – whatever.
  • Go on an adventure or have fun? Share it!
  • Whatever is on your mind….

My turn…..

  • Snowfall in places that hardly EVER get snow. Must be global warming. Has to be.

  • From the  – “You’ve Got To Be Kidding Me” File: A Congressman in California is wanting to BAN fossil fuel cars by the year 2040.  Seems like there are enough problems to solve that looking 20+ years in the future to predict the automobile industry

  • Finally went and saw Justice League. If you are into the action-packed, superhero type movies then you will love this one. Awesome!

  • So here is a question: Let’s say you had a friend who wanted an AR-15. You had a stripped lower and decided to build them one. The purpose of the “need” for the AR is the defense of property in the country. This is not city environment. Caliber must be .223/5.56.

What would you build? Optics?

Something for you…….

Working on getting the hand pump for the well; my ’62 Chevy Impala will have to have minor work to get road worthy again. This is the transportation for as gasoline lasts in the event of an EMP.
I have to travel from Clemson area to the VA Hospital in Asheville no less than twice a year. I’m trying to build a get home bag for the 90 mile trip in the event I need it. I’m looking at a two week trip by foot. Two dilema’s. The length of the trip dictates no day pack is going to work, and being a VA facility, no weapons allowed on the grounds (yeah, sure I obey that one). I have the large A.L.I.C.E. pak and frame. Might end up using it. Folks, I’m open to suggestions from your experience.

Oren, might want to look into caching items along the route to help lighten the load. Something as small as a 5gal bucket or 4″ PVC tube could give you a few days worth of food or supplies. Also, a game cart or look into a folding bicycle to take with you. I’m seeing them locally on craigslist for a steal but always late in getting one. Lastly, might want to look into a lighter commercial pack. Even one of those packable 40-50 liter travel ones that weigh about 1lb vs the 8-9lb dry weight of a Alice pack. Alice pack is roughly 2500 cu in of space or 50 liters, that’s another 7lbs of food/gear that could be carried but not all people like those travel backpacks. Just some thoughts.

Oren – I agree with jh and his suggestions.

Another option I highly recommended is to develop relationships with people between Clemson and the VA facility. Having contacts – friends – that you could set up communications with once you are within range and possibly get a good night sleep and resupply would be extremely valuable. It is not impossible. A friend of mine is working on setting up a MAG(mutual assistance group/network) covering North Carolina and SOuth Carolina with an emphasis within an hour of Charlotte. While you are outside this area there are those that have attended meetings from 2 hours away(Asheville for example). Everything is organized via FB.

To add to the other excellent suggestions, I would think getting the Impala running and using it for the trips to the VA. That should at least cover you if its an EMP scenario. Also, lots of cash to aid with resupplying. At that distance there is no way to carry all the food you will need. Water can be gathered along the way with a good filter. I’m sure you’ll react instantly and cash will still be useful at that stage.

Oren, Sometimes there is a Fisher House ( stay for free-but its usually on the VA grounds) -maybe you could stash some items there while you are in the VA-worth checking into). Maybe theres a prepper contact in the area of the VA that would let you
    keep a BOG there? Lightning

Been switching over to the winter gear for vehicles and personal kits. Hardest thing is getting the female half proper winter clothing, we always focus on ‘us’ but outfitting family members is even harder because while she understands preparedness she doesn’t care for the para-military look of most clothing/equipment. Question for northern folks, do you include winter camo into your gear? We currently have a pair of surplus German camo capes and USGI Arctic jackets with homemade evergreen splotches as part of our winter kits. I’m currently in the process of designing a sil-nylon white cover to go over two of our tents for winter use.
As to the country AR build, keep it a basic M4 pattern with flattop upper and folding BUS, 1-4 or 1-6 variable scope, two point sling, and white light. After a half dozen night shoots I’ve put Streamlight TLR-1HP lights on our ‘go to rifles’. The tight cone and great illumination is fantastic at 25ft and out to 300 yards. Might also want to look into how it prints using 64-69gr bullets. The BTHP, OTM or soft points may be better at different types of targets from 4 legged to 2 legged at various distances in a country setting.

    1. Uncle George says:

JH- I do not include any camo in my get home bag/ truck bag. My thinking is I do not want to look tactical. Sort of the gray man approach. I like the sil-nylon idea. It would sure help night time security if there is snow on the ground.

    2. JR says:

Thanks for the info JH. The “country AR” info is pretty much what I was thinking and goes right along with the “Patriot Rifle” I built a while back. I still have it and love.
