Q & A Day……America, Liberty, Patriotism….and Freedom

Ask a question and I will give you an answer. It can be about pretty much anything – politics, firearms, current events, survival, preparedness, or “Why isn’t there mouse-flavored cat food?  – whatever.

Go ahead – “make my day.”

jh – I will let author Jerry Ahern answer this for himself via an email he sent me on July 10th, 2010 – where I had asked him if he rewrote The Survivalist would he modernize JTR’s weapons:

Jerry Ahern – “Sharon and I have no plans at the moment to pick up the saga. And, frankly, if we did, about the

only thing I’d change weapons-wise is I’d make certain JTR had a good Benchmade lockblade folder

added to his weapons and I’d probably give him an AK-47 variant, too. Remember – I still carry a

Detonics CombatMaster much of the time! I’m not big on change and that’s not a political remark. But,

      it could be.”

I published an interview I did with him back in 2010 and it appears to no longer be available. I will look into republishing it soon. Wish I had been able to meet him.

Interesting about the Benchmade pocket knife, I was just wondering as I recently acquired a Glock 27 and compared it to my Combat Master. Roughly the same size but the G27 being a lot lighter & holding more cartridges. Thank you

Right now Camping Supplies has a sale on antibiotics and free shipping. I just placed an order.
Question for you Rourke- What do you think will be the most important issue in 2017 that we preppers need to be concerned with ? Thanks. Lightning

    1. JR says:

Good question Lightning. Who knows? Right? If Hillary had won the election I would have been a little more sure of the answer. As I have mentioned several times previously I am very hopeful for 2017 and look at this coming year as a time to take advantage of. Anything could happen. Although I am a Trump supporter he could do something really crazy/stupid and send the stock market spiraling downward. International conflict could escalate and we could get sucked into a war. Terrorist attacks. Let’s hope it all goes well.

Recently I had my leatherman (wave if I remember correctly) confiscated by TSA. (My own stupidity for forgetting I put it in my backpack while driving to AK). Needless to say I’m in the market for a new one. I’ve been reading multiple reviews online but would like some first hand experience with recommendations. Anyone have one that they’re particularly fond of? (Brand name is not important)

Had the exact same thing happen to me a number of years ago with my demo version Leatherman. They would have been happy to keep it. Instead, I told them I would take care of it and exited security. Not having much time, I stepped out of the terminal and slipped it into the landscaping bark outside the building. When I returned a week later, there it was, safe and sound. Sounds crazy and not the best plan (the best plan would have been to purge my gear more thoroughly), but, it worked.

      1. D says:

They offered that option, unfortunately it was midnight in AK and I was on a one-way back home. Had it not taken United (horrible airline) over an hour to finally check in my bags I would have called my buddy back. By then he was back to his place. Not worth the $ of a new one.

I still like the one hand opening ability of the Gerber line of multi-tools. I destroyed a original Gerber 600 blunt nose (I think), sent it in to get fixed and they sent me back a note saying that version isn’t safe anymore and included a brand new modern one as a replacement for free that stays in the emergency evac kit. I do have four Leathermans from a original that’s still going strong I keep with my shooting gear and in my GHB then a pair of waves still in their packages as backups. I have two gerber keychain models that I destroyed, will never buy those again. Never cared for the SOG brand but have a friend who loves his.

    3. JR says:

I have several Gerbers and have enjoyed them – especially the Gerber Suspension(my favorite). I have one Leatherman and can tell its quality is at a higher level then the Gerbers – although the Suspension is very nice.
