From the Desk of John Rourke – July 12th, 2017

Was considering changing the name of my take on coming events from the American Reformation to a more recognizable term like – “Second Civil War”. The reasoning behind this is purely recognition. People read “CW2” and they know exactly what I am referring to. “American Reformation” – not so much. We’ll see.

Started watching the series “LOST” on Netflix. I always enjoyed it. Back when it originally aired I watched through Season 2 and then got…..lost.

So I’ve started a new project I don’t believe I mentioned before. I am building a hidden gun storage frame. It’s sorta like this:

The one I’m building will have a hinged front held shut with magnets. It will be sized for a pistol and depending on how it comes out a rifle sized version may be in order. I’ll post some pictures up once it’s complete.

I hear you Rourke. Maybe what has started as American Reformation can/might is turning into CW2? Interesting thought. All the more me and my family have been more active outside. My wife actually went running with me today. “Shocker!” There are those that just can’t be physically active and/or are limited for whatever reason. I’m guessing and hoping they are working the brain over for all the possibilities to protect themselves. Kind of like a deaf person. They cannot hear, but as a result their other senses are extremely honed.

    Thank you JBernDrApt for sharing.

Speaking of which. Have any of you considered insect protection? I mean I know there are citronella plants and what not, but what about every other insect?

    1. Uncle George says:

Capt: First, I hope your wife doesn’t read this page. Second, for insect protection I use permethrin. You treat your clothes with it, and I can tell you it really works. They sell it in packages that are said to treat one outfit of clothes (shirt, pants, etc). It lasts 5 to 10 washings. The problem is that it is expensive. One work around, if you don’t mind risking going against the label restrictions, is use the stuff they sell at farm stores. It is the same stuff as far as I can tell, and you just have to do the math to dilute it down to 0.5% solution. It does not kill on contact, but the ticks either leave, or die on your skin. I still get some bites, but I haven’t pulled off a live tick in three years. My method of removing ticks (if I ever do find one alive) will be to get dressed and go about my day. They will die soon enough. Let me know if you have any questions.

      1. goingray58 says:

If you buy the single permethrin kit it is pricey as you said, If you go on Amazon you can buy Martin’s for 24.00 32% I think, for around 25 dollars. 16 oz (1/2) in 5 gallons makes 5% solution that treats 4-5 complete adult outfits socks and all with enough left for a spray bottle or two left for touch ups etc.. . Supply your own gloves to handle wet clothing. 5-6 laundering is my experience, but I am sure that depends on temp and detergent as well as time of year. those kits for one set are about 35.00 if I remember.
Martins has no petroleum in it as some do, to make it stick to cows and animals longer.. so it has no negative effect on clothes. Let it dry completely. Fish and rodents to no well tolerate it as in it kills them so watch run off and don’t spray around johnny the hamster or he’ll twitch and go Tango Uniform on you . :).. Might make sarah ot little billy sad :(…..
Chickens and other furred critters are ok with it so far. I just don’t use it for several weeks before we eat anything that was wearing it. (supposed to be OK to.. I just don’t). Like filtering water .. there aint no new water and all the water in the world has been through something several times… So maybe I’ll filter it one more time for good measure.. enjoy ur tea.. 🙂 and have a good weekend.
PS I have a printed recipe for the mixture else where if you want it.

I’m impressed GG, you know this stuff. I don’t use gloves based on my research. They fed rats 750mg or some such for 90 days with no ill effects. Apparently your skin will render the solution inert in about 15 minutes (there is a fancy name for it, which I forget). For those species that it is toxic, from what I can find out, it is only while it is wet. For instance, it is toxic to cats (but not dogs, ever heard of flea dip?) but you can spray their bedding, as long as you let it dry before they use it again.
It is also good for outdoor and indoor pest spraying. Indoors, it has a residual effect for about 6 months (I had to rename the Wasp Shed). Outdoors, it will last about 30 days, depending on rainfall. It’s great stuff to have around. Mix it up in a pump sprayer and have at it.

          1. goingray58 says:

Uncle George .. I don’t disagree… I think the issue is concentration .. which is equal to dosage .. since it’s a neurotoxin…. it dissipates quickly as you said …
and fish are in water so.. of course it stays wet there.
I have a friend I turned on to it that uses it on his goats at 5% on the goat for fleas and ticks (he has em cleaning out brush etc then turn em into meat and add new little ones), he does their bedding as well. We do for quail and chickens. While it doesn’t make it into eggs .. from what read, you want to not spray a couple weeks before you butcher the animal, as a best practice.

            good discussion

It may be of interest to you that I discovered your page because of one of the American Reformation articles. I visit often ever since. Anyone that doesn’t understand the implications of ‘American Reformation’, you probably don’t want as a reader anyway.

  3. goingray58 says:

CW2 is recognizable .. it however links you to all that means or becomes to mean.. If you want to be part of that group whatever the perception, is will be of you as well as members. Potentially. American Reformation is .. grayer maybe..

    Capt
I talked to a guy that used panty hose in the gulf and jungle. They are a little fragile .. so I’ve been looking at under armour type offerings… If it seems to control insects .. it can also reduce chafing .. unlike cotton etc.. same thing for tops .. reduces friction on shoulders, lower back for packs.. breathable … not too hot .. etc… I have some coleman hoods (mosquito nets.. that work well and are cheap. Have it in my pack. as well as net for sleeping.. My thoughts that while there are things like off etc.. they run out .. and aside from boiling myrtle berries for repellant can’t be remade.
The reason I’m looking is I have been in the out back two long periods this summer and ticks, mosquitos and chiggers are a problem every day. Sooner or later they will get scratched and infected. Not to mention the distraction. If they like you they like you, if they don’t they don’t.. I don’t know what they eat when I’m not there .. I do know what they eat when I am though.

Re insects . We used to have many insects. After feeding the wild birds for years and having a few bats around insects are nil. We also have chickens to eat bugs and
    ticks.
Standard ways are using citronella type plants- using fly tapes inside buildings-
and burning citronella candles . Good old fashioned flyswatters help also. Lehman sells a leather one that lasts a lifetime. Herbs also discourage bugs in the gardens.

    1. Capt.Michaels says:

Ah…okay that’s cool. So netting tricks, animals, and apparently from what I’ve read and now what GoingGray58 is saying. I guess Marigolds really does work. Good info guys. Thank you.

  5. goingray58 says:

Very true…. we supply nesting for Swallows… etc.. that eat their weight in bugs every day… they produce two broods a year. We have a pond so it’s a big deal for skeeters… We have herb gardens… aromatics and grow marigolds to discourage pests in with the veggies .. bugs are much less severe than they used to be and before those measures. Still it isn’t Off.. but every little bit helps.
