Coronavirus Outbreak Accelerates

This post on the Coronavirus. is being published on the evening of January 27th, 2020. For the absolute latest information on the outbreak both in China and worldwide visit a variety of news sources such as the BBC, Fox News, and the CDC website.

As of today, there is a growing sense of concern as millions of people in China are being quarantined, thousands are suspected to have contracted the virus, and over 80 have died. There are 5 confirmed cases in the United States. The good news is it appears early in the outbreak China has taken massive and appropriate actions to reduce the chance of spreading.

What is Coronavirus?

Direct from the CDC website2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus (more specifically, a coronavirus) identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread is occurring. At this time, it’s unclear how easily or sustainably this virus is spreading between people.

Why be concerned?

It is too early in the outbreak to accurately determine the longlasting health effects on those inflicted. Early indications are that beyond severe illness, the death rate rest at around 14%. As the situation develops this number could be highly inaccurate. For reference, Ebola has a 90% fatality rate.

Initial Coronavirus cases led disease specialists to believe transmission was limited to animal-to-human. As the virus has spread it has become apparent that human-to-human transmission is now occurring. How contagious is the virus?

Unknown.

What is especially dangerous about this virus is that symptoms do not begin to show for 7-14 days, however, the carrier remains contagious during this time period.

How to prevent infection?

Prevention is a must!! The key to infection control is to eliminate the ability to come in contact with any bodily fluids from an infected person. Respiratory droplets(from sneezing and coughing, etc.) must be avoided.

From CDC.gov:

Steps to Preparing

The key to preparing is preventing contact. With this in mind stopping the virus from entering your mouth, nose, and eyes is critical.

  • Wear a mask such as a 3M N95 mask or a respirator of some type.
  • Face shields, safety glasses, and swimming goggles can reduce the chance of contact.
  • gloves and other coverings should be used to prevent contact.
  • Disinfectant solutions such as Clorox and hospital-grade wipes to clean surfaces.
  • Be prepared to disinfect any and all clothing.
