In response to a recent post on inflation longtime friend of the website Scout commented and asked a few questions. Scout’s comment is below and I’ll follow it up with a few answers/thoughts.

From Scout:

It’s always just been my wife and I for 39 years. we don’t buy any more than we did 5 years ago and the grocery bill has doubled from 75 a week to 150. We have always planted large gardens but fertilizer has gone from 20 dollars a hundred lbs to 50 in 4 years. It’s cheaper to buy from the local farmers and local fruit stands now than it is to grow it ourselves. Bare in mind that when we plant we plant in acres. G90 sweet corn seed was 40 bucks a lb this year. That’s about 200 dollars an acre in seed and a hundred dollars in fertilizer.

John, how much money have you invested in your small garden? Will it feed you for a year or more? No, deer and squirrel’s won’t feed you for long. Chickens long-term won’t sustain you forever, we have kept and swapped them forever. 6 years if you’re lucky with a hobby farm. I have a real good Incubator but it takes a constant supply of 110-volt power for 28 days to get chicks. There has to be a cheaper way and organic/compost won’t cover 5 acres. We have always practiced crop rotation and soil management but without a fertilizer, you won’t make much even if the seeds you store come up.

I always try and think long, long term as in it’s never coming back. I feel that if I’m ready for that I’ll be ahead of most. I’m retired, bored, and it’s something to do.

I appreciate Scout sharing examples of how inflation has impacted him. No doubt most everyone can provide examples with most showing things are more severe than what both the news and the government suggest.

Now – Scout asked me a couple questions. I figured this would be a good place to answer:

• John, how much money have you invested in your small garden? Good question and I’m really not sure. I’d guess somewhere south of $1,200 to get started. This would include soil that I had brought in, some other amendments, purchased raised beds, and a few other items. We plan to add another garden space in the backyard in the Spring.
• Will it feed you for a year or more? Not even close. As mentioned, next Spring we will double our gardening space and hopefully double our food production. Will we be able to feed us for a year or more? Still, the answer is no. It will supplement food storage and purchased food.

As far as the other items mentioned such as hunting deer and squirrels for sustainment I agree. While the deer population is good and there are lots of other game if everyone was hunting them they would become scarce fast. We are going to be adding chickens to the property soon and they will be key to year-round food production. The goal is to have enough chickens to provide eggs daily as well as additional chickens for meat and reproduction. Right now we have a chicken run and the coop. We have a lot of ongoing projects and getting chickens will hopefully happen very soon, otherwise it will be in the Spring.

Everyone has a different perspective on what they see as far as a SHTF event. Some see a complete, grid-down collapse with 90% die-off and cannibalistic gangs going from town to town feeding on defenseless victims. I’ve been in the group of preparing for something like what occurs in the book series, 299 Days. The impact and severity of the events in 299 Days depended on geographical conditions as well as population density.

We continue to take steps to be as self-reliant as possible with each completed project and task. That’s the best we can do.

The news media and government downplay the effect of inflation in America. In this video, several real-world examples are provided that show how prices have changed from 2020 compared to 2024.

These examples are merely a random sampling of what Americans face every day. Beyond food – necessities such as fuel and housing have also skyrocketed. While many are frustrated it seems that many have adapted and simply accepted this “new normal.” I find this incredibly frustrating.

I know many of us are fed up with the actions of our government. Their policies and corrupt actions continue to wastefully spend tax dollars in many ways the people do not support.

I digress. The video below shows several random inflation examples.

Just came in from the garden. Had some significant rain earlier and finally got to go check out the “back 40″….LOL. Everything continues to look pretty good, although, the blueberry plants aren’t quite as full as last year and don’t look like they will be producing as much. We will see and adjust for next season as needed.

Over in the 1776 Telegram Group a member brought up that the turmoil on the Left Side of the political aisle is rather satisfying. I agree. It also makes me nervous as we have seen over the past several years there are very few things the Progressives will not do in the name of…….”enter agenda name here.”

Over in the Telegram group, it was mentioned that there is some expectation that there will be some “October Surprise” or other orchestrated event to distract the public and drive people’s actions toward keeping the Conservative Right out of the White House.

Nothing would surprise me and I am fully expecting it.

I continue to ramp up preps as we head towards year-end, and then I’ll keep it going into 2025.

The world continues to fall into the abyss and with that the risk of evil-doers trespassing with ill-intent on their mind is always present. Camera surveillance systems can be a great tool to watch over your property while you ae away at work, grabbing groceries – or going to visit family or friends.

This past Black Friday I picked up several Arlo outdoor cameras for a great price and placed them around the property. So far they have worked fantastic.

NOTE: Yes – I realize these will not work if there is an EMP. I also realize that for most people if there is a power outage their cameras will not work. Not in my case – but for most people. More on that shortly.

As mentioned in the video these cameras have worked fantastic. Through 100-degree sunny days and all winter with snow and temperatures dropping well under zero – they just keep working. They detect motion, illuminate the area at night when needed, and have batteries that last weeks on a full charge. An easy-to-use app provides full control and access.

Oh – and back to the fact they only work with internet access? Yes – this is true. We have Starlink and I have our system connected to a UPS so even in a power outage they will continue to work for several hours.

Originally made this video months ago as the snow started to thaw just before early Spring. You don’t hear a whole lot about storing matches for long-term survival. Back in the 80s storing matches was big for being able to get a fire going. A few thousand matches are cheap, lightweight, and work well. Today there are tons of high-tech fire-starting tools, but, I still put away a lot of matches including these waterproof matches that I make myself.

Shortly after moving into the cabin in February 2023 we soon realized there was no reliable source of internet access. As you can imagine that little tidbit of information was quite disappointing. When we were in Kentucky living in a camper we had an AT&T hotspot with FirstNet and it worked pretty well. We had speeds up to 100 Mbps and unlimited streaming.

Fast forward to February 23′ and moving into the cabin we barely had one bar on the hotspot as well as our phones. Once in a while if all the stars aligned just right a 2nd bar would show up. Streaming TV and Internet was inconsistent at best. I quickly looked to see if Starlink was available. It wasn’t, however, I requested it through the Starlink website. Within about 3 weeks I received notice it was available. I ordered it and a couple of weeks later it arrived.

Sharing the video below I made a few days ago to provide an update on what’s happening in the garden. Still a lot of work to do. I’ve got a few more raised beds to put in as well as clear weeds and soil, lay down thick weed matting, and reinstalling wood raised beds.

I have a good feeling about the garden this year.

We are heading into growing and gardening season for most of the United States. Here in Maine we are readying the raised beds and prepping the garden for planting. Thought I’d republish this as it seems pretty timely. With the world continuing to go insane gardening and being able to provide as much food for yourself is critical. ~ Rourke

Cucumbers are not only a popular garden vegetable but also a refreshing addition to salads and a healthy snack. It’s such a rewarding experience to walk out to the garden and snip a couple cucumbers off the vines to have with dinner. In this continuing series on Preparing for the Next Great Depression, we will discuss growing cucumbers in your garden, including planting from seeds, fertilization techniques, preferred soil conditions, and container gardening options. Additionally, I’ve shared my list of favorite heirloom cucumber varieties. Let’s go!!!

Growing Cucumbers in the Garden:

1. Planting:
– Start cucumber seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost or sow them directly into the garden once the soil has warmed up. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep and space them 12-24 inches apart in mounds that are 3-5 feet apart. I prefer mounds to rows as mounds help with drainage. Cucumber seeds typically germinate within 7-10 days.

🥒 GARDEN TIP: Provide a trellis or stake at planting time to support vine growth and prevent fruit from touching the ground. I’ve used tomato cages as well.

2. Sunlight:
– Choose a location in your garden that receives full sunlight for at least 6-8 hours a day. Cucumbers thrive in warm and sunny conditions.

3. Soil:
– Cucumbers prefer loose, well-draining soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0.
– Prepare the soil by incorporating organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. This improves soil fertility and moisture retention.

🥒 GARDEN TIP: If you have access to Black Kow brand composted cow manure it’s really good stuff. I’ve used it for years. My local Lowe’s carries it.

4. Watering:
– Cucumbers require consistent moisture to prevent bitterness and ensure proper fruit development. Water deeply and regularly, aiming to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
– Mulching around cucumber plants helps retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth.

5. Fertilization:
– Before planting, add a balanced fertilizer, such as water-soluble 10-10-10, to the soil following the package instructions.
– Once the plants begin to flower, switch to a fertilizer higher in phosphorus, such as 5-10-10, to promote fruiting. Apply the fertilizer according to the recommended rates.

6. Pollination:
– Cucumbers rely on pollinators such as bees for successful fruit development. To attract pollinators, consider planting flowers nearby..

7. Pest and Disease Control:
– Monitor your plants regularly for common pests such as aphids, cucumber beetles, and powdery mildew.
– Practice good garden habits by removing any diseased or infested plant material promptly.

Harvesting:
– Cucumber varieties have varying maturity times, typically ranging from 50 to 70 days from planting to harvest. Check the seed packet or plant label for specific information.
– Regular harvesting is crucial to encourage continuous production. Harvest cucumbers when they reach the desired size, typically 6-8 inches in length(depending on variety). Overripe cucumbers can negatively affect future fruiting, so remove them promptly.

Container Gardening Tips:
– Select a large container with drainage holes to ensure proper water drainage. If holes are on the bottom keep the container off the ground to stop holes from plugging.
– Use high-quality, well-draining potting mix enriched with compost or organic matter.
– Cucumbers grown in containers may require more frequent watering, as containers tend to dry out faster than garden soil. Monitor soil moisture regularly and water when needed.
– Provide a trellis or stake for vertical growth, securing them to the container for support. Again – tomato cages can work as well.

Rourke’s Recommended Heirloom Cucumber Varieties:

Boston Pickling Cucumber: If you enjoy homemade pickles, the Boston Pickling cucumber is an excellent choice. These small to medium-sized cucumbers have bumpy skin and a crisp texture, making them ideal for pickling or adding to salads.

National Pickling Cucumber: Another favorite for pickling enthusiasts, National Pickling cucumbers are blocky and uniform in shape. They have a crunchy texture and can also be enjoyed fresh in salads. MY FAVORITE!! 👍

Straight Eight Cucumber: True to its name, the Straight Eight cucumber produces straight, uniform fruits with dark green skin. They have a classic cucumber flavor and are versatile for various culinary uses, including slicing, salads, and pickling.

Marketmore 76 Cucumber: This popular variety is known for its disease resistance and abundant production. Marketmore 76 cucumbers are dark green, firm, and have a slightly sweet taste. They are perfect for slicing and salads.

Spacemaster 80 – Are you dealing with limited space or growing in containers? The Spacemaster is the perfect high-producing, heirloom for you. Excellent for pickling or slicing, plant the Spacemaster indoors or out. 

Summary

By following the tips and techniques outlined here, you can grow a ton of cucumbers and avoid the cost of going to the grocery store. Whether you choose to grow cucumbers in the garden or in containers – proper planting, watering, fertilization, and pest control are essential for maximum production. Experiment with different heirloom cucumber varieties now to discover what works best for you now before you have to rely on the garden in a more serious situation.

BTW – fresh cucumbers are best sliced and sprinkled with salt and pepper. YUM!! 😋

The show takes into consideration limited food, medical, and other resources. Threats from outside the community become a large focus as desperation spreads across the region.

The Feel of the Show:

“Jericho” keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen nextand how problems will be solved. It’s full of suspense, making you feel like you’re right there with the characters. The show doesn’t just focus on action; it also looks at how the characters feel and think in a world falling apart. If I had to pick one word to describe the “feel of the show” I would use – anticipation. Watching the series you are always anticipating what will happen next.

The Characters:

The people acting in “Jericho” did a fantastic job. The main character, Jake Green, played by Skeet Ulrich, is great at showing his character’s growth. Lennie James, who plays Robert Hawkins, is mysterious and interesting. All the actors do a fantastic job, making us really care about the characters. The relationships shown throughout the series are believable and viewers get invested in what happens to them.

 

Special Effects, Editing, Pace, and Talking:

“Jericho” might not have the flashiest special effects, but the way they show the world tumbling into a confused, apocalyptic existence just seems very plausible. The way they put the episodes together keeps the story interesting and flowing. The pace of the show is just right.

Why You Should Watch:

“Jericho” isn’t just about explosions and danger. It’s about how people act when the world turns upside down. It makes us think about what’s important in life and how we’d react if everything we know suddenly disappeared. Many situations are presented that create problems that need to be solved. Lack of medicine, food, fuel, and dealing with outside threats are situations where problems need to be solved. This show gets you thinking about what you would do if in that situation.

In short, “Jericho” is a thrilling and thought-provoking show that’s all about surviving, sticking together, and relationships. If you’re into apocalyptic storylines and fantastic characters – then “Jericho” is a must-see.

Here in Central Maine we still have a good amount of Winter left. Hey – we could get a foot of snow next week. Who knows? This upcoming weekend we’ll be starting some seeds indoors to get a bit of a headstart. A lot of planning going on right now. We just got 8 yards of aged composted cow manure and will get some “Super Soil” in a few weeks as well.

Trying to get the homestead moving towards a true “homestead” is a lot of work. While both Maine Prepper Girl and I work full-time jobs we keep heading towards the goal – to be as independent as possible.

In this Instagram post, I shared a photo of me putting back some toilet paper and paper towels in a 45-gallon trash can.

I’ve actually been criticized for storing extra toilet paper which I simply don’t understand. The premise from others is that it is eventually going to run out and you’ll have to rely on other means to facilitate the needed task at hand. Sure – that’s true but if that thinking was applied to other areas of preparedness then you wouldn’t store extra food as it will eventually run out, right?

I think I’ll keep putting back some extra toilet paper….just in case.

In the event of a severe economic collapse where the value of the US dollar plummets, unemployment skyrockets, and traditional means of commerce become challenging, barter centers could emerge as a vital source for supplies and services. Over-the-counter (OTC) medications are readily available without a prescription and can be a convenient way to manage common ailments.  In this world where access to medical services may be interrupted or is priced so high it’s not often an option – OTC medications are frequently the first step towards relief. This quick guide provides information on some of the most frequent health issues for which people often seek OTC medications and offers recommendations.

I’m not a physician although I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once. Always consult with a healthcare professional or pharmacist before starting any new medication, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions or are taking other medications. OK – that’s out of the way.

1. Pain and Fever:
   • Common Ailment: Headaches, muscle aches, fever
   • OTC Medications: Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Naproxen
   • Recommendations:

I’ve shared this mini-story previously and recently as an Instagram post. For those who may have missed it……..

As I slowly walked along the edge of the wood line looking out into the field – I saw them. They were 30 yards away and staggering in a generally parallel direction with the edge of pines that concealed me. I had to decide – do I allow them to exist? Do I allow them to continue to feed on the unarmed and ill-prepared? Do I allow them to kill the innocent? The answer was simple…..No!

I grabbed a fist-sized rock and threw it over their heads to distract them. They bit – and turned in the direction of the impact. In an instant, I darted out of the woods straight towards the closest of the undead. Within seconds the first was 10 yards away and I had my Buck Hoodlum knife exiting its sheath in my right hand. The target was just beginning to turn in response to my running as I twisted my upper body to the right so my left shoulder was pointing at the walking pile of rotting flesh and then with one quick motion like a coiled spring I twisted to the left. The Buck Hoodlum sliced through the air in my extended right hand. The Hoodlum penetrated the skull of the undead easily and removed the top half. My first target was down – and was not going to be coming back.

Target two reached out with a moan. I wonder if there was any emotion in this thing as it saw its partner crumble to the ground. Regardless – it had to be done. The Hoodlum was still at the end of its initial strike and was on my left side. I turned my wrist so the blade would face the undead and I swung back – removing the arm which had just touched me.

“It touched me……ewwwwwww!!” I thought to myself.

The undead stepped back as his arm hit the ground. Black liquid drained from the wound. One final strike was all that was needed as an overhead swing impacted the skull atop the forehead and split it in half. The undead dropped and laid to rest next to his “friend”.

Wiping the bloody blade off on the clothes of the fallen – I said out loud – “Thank you Ron Hood.”

Depending on where you live a power outage in the midst of winter can be deadly. Have a good supply of blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing “just in case”.  Don’t forget about your vehicle. People die every year after their car slides off the road and becomes stuck. If you need to wait for several hours and your car isn’t running have extra blankets, hand warmers, etc. to stay warm.
