Well, Happy The Day After Christmas!!!

Trump Administration reducing the funding to the UN. I agree completely. The automatic nature of tax dollars being fed to overseas organizations and governments needs to stop. Other countries need to pay their fair share. Charity is fine and we are a generous and charitable country.

Guatemala is now moving their embassy to Jerulseum following the United States lead. Fantastic!!

    How To Paint Your AR-15

I’ve made a few attempts to paint AR’s and the results were amateurish at best. While Cerakote and other specialty coatings are very popular(and expensive) – a good-ole paint job can do wonders to enhance your AR.

The video below shows a great technique. Think I’ll try it on my next build.

The GOP Tax Bill has been passed. I watched President Trump and GOP Congressional leaders at their press conference and it was impressive. Although it was, for the most part, a show I was impressed with the appearance of unity. I can only hope this unity continues and more can be accomplished.

Very telling that not a single Democrat voted to reduce taxes in the United States. Not surprising – but telling.

AT&T & Wells Fargo announced bonuses and pay increases for their workers shortly after the passing of the Bill. AT&T stated that over 200,000 employees would receive a bonus of $1,000. Wells Fargo and Fifth Third banks announced bonuses due to the tax bill as well as increasing their minimum wage to $15 per hour.

Not a single Democrat vote. Not one.

The search for a Jeep Cherokee continues. Not much luck. Most of the ones I find have some type of mechanical issues and they are asking too much. May expand my search into some other vehicles. Currently looking for a 94′-00′ model.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

When someone thinks of a “bug out vehicle,” some big 4×4 with knobby tires is usually envisioned. With many of these vehicles(like my Jeep Wrangler) getting less than 20mpg is the norm.

With fuel being such an important and vital commodity the “economy” car may make some sense as a bug out vehicle.

Possible Scenario: Making a trip while there are lines at gas stations getting 20 miles per gallons versus 30 miles per gallon. 15 gallons in the tank plus a 5-gallon gas can equate to 400 miles versus 600 miles range.

    This is significant.

    Just a thought.

  • One Example of the BOB/GHB

    One Example of the BOB/GHB

All of us have some type of bug out bag or get home bag in our vehicle – right? The video below shows one example with a great description as to what is included and why. This is a minimalist version of what many people put together. Often larger kits are upwards of 40-80 pounds. My preference is a medium sized kit no more than 30 pounds give or take.

There are pros and cons to smaller and larger kits. The most obvious pro’s with smaller kits they are lighter allowing for faster travel on foot and likely attract less attention. Larger kits weigh more thus slowing progress, however, they provide more supplies which could be important.

Everyone has to build their kit for specifics that only they know. Weather, geography, fitness level – these are but a few criteria that should be considered.

On with the video from 21st Century Prepper……….

This past weekend has been super busy and as such posting this week will be limited.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

There have been a lot of stories going around about “UN troops” going to Chicago. Ladies and gentleman – this is a publicity stunt and the vast majority of the stories are set up as clickbait. Clickbait? Yes. Clickbait – if unfamiliar with the term – is generally an article with an unbelievable and attention-grabbing title. Often there is some tiny piece of truth behind it. This “Chicago Asking for UN To Help With Gun Violence” is a good example.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

The mass power outage in Atlanta is a good example of the chaos from just one area losing power. The domino effect on transportation will be felt everywhere. Remember – it’s not just affecting passengers trying to travel but commercial planes moving product such as the US Mail, UPS, and Fed Ex.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Picked up an Anderson stripped AR lower on sale for $45.99. Great price. Now deciding what to build with it. Considering something different. Not really sure.

I’m not interested in 300 Blackout. Considering a 6.5 Grendel as a long range shooter. Likely I’ll stick with 5.56.

    “Serenity now! Serenity now!”

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

People over complicate and over analyze survival and preparedness all the time.

Someone says they prefer “this” gun and they are immediately attacked about how they are wrong. Someone likes WISE foods for food storage – yup, they are idiotic because some website said WISE isn’t as good as Brand X. Have “this” knife in your bug out bag? Hell, you might as well not even have a bug out bag.

Everyone needs to make their own decisions and evaluate their own situations.

Discussion and exchanging ideas is fine. Often it isn’t what is said but how it’s said.

  • Review: 10,000mAh Solar Power Bank Charger

Review: 10,000mAh Solar Power Bank Charger

This will be a fairly short and simple review. I’ve been using this 10,000mAh solar power bank since November of 2016. It works and works well. Numerous trips including my jaunt down the Virginia Creeper Trail I’ve used this external battery pack to keep my cell phone topped off. Communications with family, being able to take pictures and videos, as well as keeping in touch with others is important.

This solar power bank can also charge other batteries for things like flashlights and walkie-talkies.

With 10,000mAh of capacity, it can charge most modern smartphones at least twice or keep it topped off for hours and hours.

The solar function is primarily for topping off the unit or charging it fully if it is left in the sun and not used. It takes days to charge it via the sun so understand that is not a primary means for charging. The 10,000mAh solar power bank is meant to be charged at home – then taken on the go.

Recently I ran the power bank almost dead and left it outside for several days. It did eventually charge completely and survived at least two days of downpours and also one night of freezing temperatures. So – after a year of use I can fully endorse and recommend it.

I have now convinced myself I must have this……

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

    Well – Life Happens.

My older son had a driver run a red light and Jonathan t-boned him. He was banged up a bit but is OK. The accident was witnessed by a police officer so the blame was rightly placed on the other driver. He was driving my youngest sons 1994 Jeep Cherokee.

Project Jeep Cherokee is put on hold….for now.

The Cherokee will be totaled and I am waiting to hear what the payout will be. The plan is to buy another one . Hopefully, we will get enough to pick up a slightly newer model after the interior change but I’m not really concerned with that. A lift kit already included would be great. Of course, when I look around it is possible a different make and model might be found.

A budget 4×4 around $2000 leaves limited options and after working on and driving the Cherokee I am biased in that direction.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Think forward to 2020. How nasty is this next Presidential election going to get? Of course, we’ll have other elections on a State-level as a precursor.

  • Marlin 336W .30-30 Lever Action Rifle Review

Marlin 336W .30-30 Lever Action Rifle Review

With the large selection of modern semi-auto “black” rifles such as the AR-15 and AK-47, the lever action is rarely discussed. Although many would argue there is little reason to consider a lever action in .30-30 Winchester with the availability of low-price semi-auto’s – options are a wonderful thing. As stated in the video there are numerous areas around the country where semi-auto, magazine fed weapons are illegal. The lever action in those areas would be a good option. Besides – there are a lot of uses for firearms than just self-defense.

Growing up it was common to see pickup trucks with rifles mounted in the rear window. More frequently than not at least one of those rifles was a lever action and the other a shotgun. Sometimes called a “truck gun”, the lever action certainly attracts less attention from people than an AK-47.

While there are pro’s and con’s to the design, function, and ergonomics of the lever-action – it is found in thousands of gun safes all across the United States.

I wonder how many deer have been harvested with lever actions?

From the AR Building Desk of John Rourke – December 12th, 2017

Recently had a lot of questions regarding building AR’s. I am not an expert and some have – and will – call what I do assembly rather than building. That’s fine and not far from accurate.  I have never built an AR upper from parts. It’s planned but never found the need. So complete AR upper componants have been the cornerstone of my builds. Lowers? That’s a different story. i have built almost all of my AR’s using stripped lowers. For those who are not aware a stripped lower is merely the lower half which holds the trigger and hammer and magazine – as well as the stock.

In no way am I going to do a step-by-step guide to building an AR. YouTube is perfect for this and there are some excellent video’s that show each step.

So this isn’t too long let’s build JBernDrApt an AR pistol in the simplest manner possible:

Lower: PSA AR-pistol Complete Lower with Shockwave Blade Stabilizer – $179.99(sale!)

Upper: MSF 10.5″ SS Barrel Upper with Free Float Quad Rail – $279.99

Bolt Carrier Group: M16 Bolt Carrier Group(BCG) with Charging Handle – $74.99

    Total Price: $534.97

This will basically build you this – fairly similiar:

Granted – there will be some shipping charges, transfer fee(don’t pay more than $15), and you have to get a magazine and sights.

Not bad if you want a pistol.

Quote: Chris Kyle on Going to Heaven

“I am a strong Christian. Not a perfect one—not close. But I strongly believe in God, Jesus, and the Bible. When I die, God is going to hold me accountable for everything I’ve done on earth. He may hold me back until last and run everybody else through the line,  because it will take so long to go over all my sins. “Mr. Kyle, let’s go into the backroom. . . .” Honestly, I don’t know what will really happen on Judgment Day. But what I lean toward is that you know all of your sins, and God knows them all, and shame comes over you at the reality that He knows.”

“I believe the fact that I’ve accepted Jesus as my savior will be my salvation. But in that backroom or whatever it is when God confronts me with my sins, I do not believe any of the kills I had during the war will be among them. Everyone I shot was evil. I had good cause on every shot. They all deserved to die.”

Watching a documentary called “The Enemies Within” on Amazon Prime. Quite good.

It goes over a narrative of how the demise of communism in Germany and the Soviet Union led to a resurgence of it – merely in a different form. This new form is now called Democratic Socialism, Progressivism, and modern day Liberalism.

It is so obvious when you look at the language used by Communists decades ago and those who profess socialism today in mainstream politics – they are very much one in the same.

Another issue is so many in Congress with an (R) after their name fails to follow the Constitution and back many policies right in line with Communism. Of course, they spin the narrative so it “appears” they are on the right side of the issue when really they are just watered down communists.

The video below is telling when Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was the Chairman of the DNC at the time, was asked the difference between a Socialist and a Democrat.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

So I was at Wal-Mart today standing at a urinal and this guy walks up to do his thing in the next one beside me. He looked over and said – “The chair is against the wall…..the chair is against the wall.”

    I thought – “What the……?”

“So I looked straight ahead and said – “John has a long mustache. John has a long mustache.”

He zipped up and walked out.

  • Project: AR Pistol Build

    Project: AR Pistol Build

I’m addicted to building AR’s. I admit it. I’ve been actively searching for a support group to get help. Unfortunately, they all meet at my local gun shop and we end up walking out with lower parts kits, bolt carrier groups, and triggers. It’s not helping.

For my latest build, I went after another AR pistol(aka legal SBR). I’m not going to go through every pin, spring, and part as it was put together. That’s boring and will take too long. Here are the basics with a summary at the end:

    Lower:  80% non-serialized, completed to 100%

Upper: Mid State Firearms 10.5″ SS 5.56/.223 Slanted Hybrid Keymod & Flash Can with Phosphate M16/AR15 Bolt Carrier Group

    Trigger Group: HIPERTOUCH EDT

Charging Handle: Strike Industries AR Charging Handle with Extended Latch

Lower Parts Kit: Basic Anderson kit

Bolt Release: Strike Industries Extended Bolt Catch XBC

Fire Control Pins: KNS MOD-2 Anti-Rotation/Anti-Walk Pin Kit

Stock/Brace: Sig SBX15 Brace with KAK Buffer Tube Kit

    Optic: Sightmark Wolverine CSR

    SLIDESHOW

    [slideshow_deploy id=’9532′]

So – why did I build this gun? Did I have some objective? Is it in my arsenal to fill a specific role?

Come on. I built it because I wanted to!!

AR pistols are some of the most fun firearms you can own. They can serve numerous functions when it comes to self-defense as well. In fact, my “SHTF Go To” gun is an AR pistol.

The barrel is 10.5″ in length. For a “pistol” build I prefer 10.5″ as it is MUCH quieter and has MUCH less concussion than a 7.5″ and retains better ballistics as well. The Sig brace was chosen as I wanted to do something different. Previous projects used the Shockwave Blade. I didn’t think I would care for the Sig brace however after putting it to use I love it. So comfortable and makes for a great cheek weld.

The Phosphate M16 Bolt Carrier Group is a budget bolt however it works. I have one in another gun with many rounds through it and so far so good.

The Hipertouch EDT trigger is phenomenal. Crisp, short reset, almost no take up at all, and breaks at around 5.5 pounds. For around $90 it is a bargain. I use it in my of my AR’s.

The Mid State Firearms upper has performed perfectly. The front handguard is extremely comfortable and lends itself to a c-clamp grip. The Sightmark CSR optic so far has done well. Seems very well built and has stayed zeroed through a few hundred rounds. The red dot has a slight touch of flaring but nothing that will be an issue for ranges this gun is likely to see. Controls are perfect. 50,000-hour battery life is nice.

The flash can helps drive the concussion and noise forward. I struggle to tell a difference but it certainly protects the muzzle.

    Summary:

As with all AR pistols, this project is small, light, portable, and incredibly handy.

With the issue of communication post-SHTF, there is not nearly enough discussion regarding listening. I’m just as guilty as anyone. In my own plans a “commo center” is set up with TV, internet/laptop/tablet, AM, FM, ham radio of various frequencies, CB, FRS/GMRS, shortwave, and a scanner. The vast majority of these devices are to gather intelligence.

No one knows exactly what will transpire. When it all starts the internet may remain for days or even weeks. Using a laptop or tablet could be very useful gaining information via local or regional news. AM/FM is certainly a viable source for information with many “all news” stations.

Of course, the old standby of two tin cans connected by a string is an option.

Many of us that write material for magazines, blogs, social media, or publish books do so not for the “big money” we get – but because we enjoy it.

With that said there are expenses involved and it is difficult to retain a high level of publishing without recouping some of those costs. Often this is done by taking on advertisers and sponsors. Oh – and our time is valuable as well.

In my own case, I am very particular who I develop relationships with. Over the last 8 years, I’ve been involved with some of the biggest names in the preparedness industry. Up until recently, it has been a mutually beneficial arrangement.

While I will provide no names I’ve had two businesses EVERYONE has heard of burn me recently. I put in a lot of work for these entities based on an agreement and then when it is time for them to pay me(very little, by the way) – nothing.

While I would do much of what I do just because I enjoy it – the amount of work I put in would drop by 90% if it was totally for free.

Just a little, tiny rant – totally free.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Trumps move on Israel is such a welcome change from the cold relationship that the Obama administration had over the last 8 years with one of our closest allies.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

This is an example of the pathetic lies our Congressional representatives spew. You’ve heard it about almost every piece of legislation that is brought forth. Propaganda comes from both sides but I’ll tell you – the Progressives REALLY know how to turn it up a notch.

Started re-reading Day by Day Armageddon – one of my favorite books ever. It’s of the zombie genre however you don’t have to be a zombie fan to appreciate it. Written like a jounral detailing events day by day it is really a “can’t put it down” book.

Day by Day Armageddon, zombie, book

Latest ridiculous conspiracy I have heard is this: The California fores that have been so destructive lately were started by….you guessed it….the GOVERNMENT. In fact they used high-tech very powerful lasers to start the inferno.

  • Alert: Proof of The Communist Elite Agenda In The USA

Alert: Proof of The Communist Elite Agenda In The USA

Communism has been feared in the United States since World War I. An acceleration of this fear occurred through the 40’s and into the 1950’s as many believed that communism would spread and infiltrate the United States. Although history shows that communism declined as a domestic concern and was eradicated internally by the end of the Cold War, many believe that a communist agenda remained behind the scenes all these years.

Look – I’m not a conspiracy theorist nor do I have a very large inventory of tin foil hats. I will say that my mind has opened to many things that just 5-10 years ago I would have called ridiculous. If you are so inclined to believe what is in this video – how does it change your perspective on prepping and politics?

    On with the video……

Probable 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate Senator Elizabeth Warren slammed the GOP Tax Plan – and then admitted she hadn’t read it.

My response to her on Twitter –

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Ran into a newbie prepper with an AR loaded with “tacticool” stuff. Drives me crazy seeing a nice AR with 5 pounds of stuff mounted all over it. While it may be fun to customize a gun if it is truly going to be used for self-defense/defending the property look at what is on it. Engaging targets accurately, quickly, and repeatedly is important. How you look doing it doesn’t matter.

    For fun? No problem.

    For real situations? Problem.

Saturday’s – “What on your mind?”

Here is a place to share things you’ve been thinking about lately. What kind of things?

    • Recent accomplishments in preparedness.
    • Projects being worked on.
    • Thoughts on world events.
    • Recent purchases & recommendations
    • Current events related to politics, terrorism, crime – whatever.
    • Go on an adventure or have fun? Share it!
    • Whatever is on your mind….

    My turn…..

    • I’ve not had cable or satellite now for about 3 years. Between Netflix, Hulu, and bootleg movies and TV shows I really haven’t missed it. I spend about $50 per month on services and digital media purchases. I use Roku boxes mostly. I just signed up for a trial for Hulu Live. Hulu Live allows for live streaming of several TV channels. This is similar to cable. So far I really like it especially as I can watch Fox News. All my Roku boxes are too old to load Hulu Live so I picked up an Amazon Fire Stick – which I love. As a Prime member, I can access a ton of entertainment in the Prime library.

    • Looks like SOMETHING might – maybe – possibly – pass through Congress. No big deal. Just the largest tax cut in US history. We’ll see.

    • Is the creation of a “zombie” possible? I mean, there are concoctions in Haiti that slow the heart rate to the point that people appear to be dead – and then rise again later. We’ve had people trip out so bad on drugs they actually eat people. If some “mad scientist” had the tools and know-how I suspect they could design a drug to create the equivalent of a modern-day zombie. Possibly they would not feel pain thus they would just keep on going until their central nervous system is no longer functioning or the heart stops beating. Hmmm…….

    • Pick up a Mora knife. Man – this thing is incredibly sharp. For around $12.00 it is a great deal.

Mora, knife, survival knife, survival kit, bushcraft

Something for you…….a little “prepper humor”

Monarch 230-grain 45ACP rounds are sold by Academy Sports. I’ve shot a few hundred rounds through my Springfield MC Operator 1911 with great results. Accuracy and reliability are on par with more expensive ball ammunition I’ve shot. So far so good so I’ll keep buying.

Monarch 45ACP, brass cased, 1911, ammo, ammunition

This is BRASS ammunition. I have never shot the steel-cased 45ACP variant.

Typically found for $18.99 this is a great round for most any wallet(or purse).

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Although I have my doubts we may just be seeing an actual change in political climate across the US. The accountability of men involved in sexual assault – although I suspect there is much that is made up or at least exaggerated – is a step in the right direction. Interesting that at least to this point it involves mostly the Progressives.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Amazon, as well as many other places, continue to have some great deals. Good time to stock up.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Anyone have any experience with Frog Lube?

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Haven’t heard of any action in Congress regarding gun legislation until just recently. A bill is actually moving through the House of Representatives to EXPAND gun rights – rather than take them away. A national Reciprocity Bill has been introduced to create a situation in this country with CWP like drivers licenses. I think this would be a very positive step in the right direction.

    ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Had the passenger-side brake of Project Cherokee lock up the other night. During my lunch break had to go jack it up, remove tire, and soak it down with lube. Seems to have broken free. Hoping it will make it home tomorrow and then will work on checking everything out.

Ordered mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. As I am looking at goals for 2018 food storage is a major one. While I feel well off in the food department I’ve realized there may be additions to my group I’ve not planned for. My older son has a girlfriend he would not leave and would want to bring her to the retreat.

With that said order 5-gallon mylar bags and absorbers. The plan is to fill up another 6-8 buckets with rice and screw on gamma lids. I’ll do a couple more with beans and maybe a couple other things. Also planning on taking one bucket and use for spic and herbs.

Food is very inexpensive right now and so critically important. No better time to stock up than now.

REMAKE: Death Wish starring Bruce Willis

One of my favorite movie series is Death Wish with Charles Bronson. After typing this up I’m going to start watching it again. While very violent I enjoy the theme of “justice” by any means necessary. Those that are evil and get away with the most horrible of crimes pay in the end.

Death Wish is being remade and updated. This new movie will star Bruce Willis who I think will be a good fit. Hopefully, this will be the start of a new series. Of course – Mr. Willis will probably be accused of sexual harassment of some type and that will be the end of the series.

Gun magnets can provide a solution to a problem you didn’t even know you had! A simple $12 magnet can be mounted just about anywhere – including your car.

I used to keep my pistol in an armrest which is not uncommon and a decent way of carrying. I bought a gun magnet and relocated it to the steering wheel for much faster deployment.

Check local laws to make sure your method of carrying is lawful.

Information is power. Consider the ability to track threats in the United States, your region, State, and community. One example of this would be gang activity. Watching gang activity trends over time could provide good intelligence and indicators for area awareness. How about Antifa or Alt-Right activity? Break-ins within the community? Assault? Rapes?

I’ve been looking at ways to gather this information and then track it via maps.

It may be today such information is not immensely important but one day it may be.

  • Simple & Inexpensive Prepper Lighting Solution

Simple & Inexpensive Prepper Lighting Solution

Powers out. The suns going down. Temperatures are dropping. The zombies are…..OK, I’m getting carried away. Lighting when the powers out is not a very popular topic. Beyond flashlights, candles and oil lamps are mentioned frequently. A more modern alternative to candles and oil lamps are LED USB lights. These are small LED lights that plug into any USB port. As soon as I saw them I thought of seeing how they will work on a portable power bank.

I have numerous portable power banks. They really come in handy when regular charging methods are not available.

After receiving three of the LED USB lights from GearBest.com I did a little testing. At about $3.00 each these are easy on the wallet.

Above: LED USB Light with 3000mAh portable power bank

Above: Here’s a pic during the day to better see the setup.

Above: Back patio with a small amount of light coming from the kitchen.

Below: LED USB light turned on. Picture doesn’t do it justice as to how much it lights up the area.

Above: View from the backside after I turned it around. That fence line and those propane tanks are about 30 feet away.

Based on my calculations a 10,000mAh power bank – such as this one – will run the USB light for over 40 hours. This is significant. Sips power.

These can be used to walk around with or position in a house to light up an entire room or area. In fact, a good part of a campsite could be illuminated enough to walk around and check for the occasional bigfoot or zombie.

LED USB lights – $3 each. Not bad. Think I will order a few more.
