From the Desk of John Rourke – July 18th, 2017

There are few certainties in life and even fewer in predicting the intricacies of conditions post-SHTF. I often see people flat out state that when the SHTF “gold and silver will be worthless”. History suggests something quite different.

Through many societal, economic, and governmental collapses, gold and silver has been used in a variety of transactions from buying food to bribing politicians and law enforcement. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule but those are the exceptions.

Personal choice dictates the purchase or silver or ammunition or both. To suggest it is a waste of money to purchase precious metals, well, is at a minimum just wrong.

Ammunition prices continue to drop. This is at a local Wal-Mart. I can’t help but remember – and keep it in front of me – those times in history when ammunition was hard to find and/or became very expensive. With the low prices today stocking up is a very prudent thing to do.

Remember – it is just a matter of time before something happens to cause ammunition to skyrocket or become scarce.

Trying to mount a Yaesu 2900R 2M Ham radio in my Jeep JK. Not the easiest thing to do.  Without the use of a metal roof(mine has a soft top) I cannot get a ground plane for the antenna. It can be done but often without the best results.

Rourke- I imagine that when the SHTF EVERYTHING will be in demand.Even those of us who have prepped hard will realize I wish I had gotten…. gold and silver wont help if one doesnt have enough water and food but its always good to have the gold and silver if one can afford it-we cant but if we could we would get some.

Rourke, I respectfully disagree, and here’s why, there is no history we can draw upon that will paint the picture of the collapse society in this day and age in the past when catastrophic events major changes governments and wars happened, there was still a sense of sustainability, you still grew your food, you still jared your food, we had route sellers, you had farms you had produce people were not reliant upon technology everyone knew how to get in preserve food. human waste didn’t rely on electricity to carry it away, and treat it, people didn’t rely on slauterhouse, refrigerators, and large shipping company’s to bring it to them, people were more spread out and self reliant. In my humble opinion having silver or rare metals pay off judges, officials or lawmakers is hopeful thinking, I don’t think this will exist grid down, a form of civilization or Community will likely be at least a decade maybe decades away from this event, the movie the postman is a dolled up nice version of what will probably happen in a grid down situation! Those who collect precious metals in the hopes of being rich in the new civilization will more than likely trade everything they have Weatherby pounds of gold in the other precious metal for can of soup beans in this situation. And that’s if the other person doesn’t just take it away from you, putting yourself out there to trade in the first place is probably a roll of the dice of weather or not that person will just try to kill you or not, water word, or road warrior, with much smaller factions, even trying to farm, and go unnoticed is a large risk at first. Go to FEMA’S web sight, they have already outlined what they predict will happen in the first two years grid down, the United States of America will lose 90% of its population in two years after ANY grid down event, that includes solar storm they say happens every 100 years, been a 150 since last one by the way, nuke in the atmosphere, gotta love North Korea, last and most likely cyber attack, once again you can find countless sources saying that there are most likely dozens of countries who have already penetrated our grid with kill switch like viruses that will shut it down beyond repair for at least three years to repair, then there’s civil war, civil unrest, and so on…. there are omish communities, there are many places on earth that still live without power, if you have the means to exit the United States or set up a considerable military force and govern, literally go game of thrones on their asses, your the man! In that case I would tell you to buy silver, BUT if your the average joe like me, you better stick to beans and bullets, and pray for some corn bread.

No one can go it alone. Barter fairs will evolve because some will have skills to trade, others products, no one can do it alone. Gold and silver have stood the test of the ages and anyone left will remember the previous value if not recognize the value at that moment. You have to survive bad guys immediately, desperate neighbors next, refugees next depending on location. 90 – 120 days. You simply cannot secure a location 7×24 even with perimeter alarms with one family AND get plants, water etc
A combination of groups and neighbors might work.. depending on the who and trustworthiness.
While I would not focus on precious metal, it woudl be a part of what I do. Everyone is responsible for and suffers by their choices. We all have an idea of what a full or partial failure might mean to us. Maybe none of us are right, but you have to do something right ? After all we differ more in details that in basics. It’s a process of percentages and how much time and money you have to invest. You do what you can.

GG58″…I totally agree. I just have to get my son-in-law on board. We live on the same property and he thinks all we need is each other. He has a hard time trusting others besides us.

      I hear ya..

If you agree on a security plan .. and 6 – 8 hour shifts … multiply by the number of days in the week – 2 for time off.. to do other work and rest. What’s the number equal? Then you ask .. “how would you do it?” and wait .. for an answer.. It places a premium on the people you should meet .. .. + _ 10% .. It’s just a plan of course.. no plan is perfect or survives first contact .. then you do what you can.. Dogs help… The numbers for security are hard … real hard.. re…does a mistake cost ?
You’ll be fine .. just drag him along.. go to the prepper fests in the fall.. One in smokies in Sept.. let other people beat him up and it will feel like his idea 🙂
      good luck’
