One of my favorite movies of all time – Red Dawn. I’m talking the original one. What simple times we had back in the early 80’s. Wanted to know who the enemy was? The Soviet Union. It was simple.
Now? Enemies are everywhere.

Has anyone here trained to fight with their knife? What if let’s say your long gun malfunctioned and you A: don’t have a sidearm or B: can’t reach it before the threat reaches you? But you can reach your knife. Do you know how to use it when it comes to being up close and personal with the threat? I know I will hear I could do it or I would do it, but using a knife is a lot different than shooting someone. Even under the stress. Are you mentally and physically prepared to use that blade to take another life to protect yours? Think on it preppers….
John Rourke: I’ll throw my 2 cents in and it’ll be worth what you paid for it. Based on the original post and the threat does indeed reach you so therefore you must defend yourself. Doing so with a knife is certainly better than with nothing. There is no mention of loved ones nearby so assuming there are none – if the threat is armed with a gun – you’re dead. If the threat is armed with a knife – create separation and RUN!! If the threat is unarmed – they are dead. Forget what is seen in the movies.

OK .. so I ride with multiple knives in the everyday… I’ll do what I have to with the options. On my rig I carry a long knife tied with paracord to the strap. If it comes to that I screwed up or I need to be very quiet. That is why paracord rather than velcro or snaps.. noise. I would, dor offensive. depending on the situation be defensive. It isn’t me that put them in the way, they did .. so big whoop.. it’s an obstacle, nothing more until later. IMO. I will never willingly hurt anyone offensively. There is zero reason, unless they are a threat. Moderate training.. So my confidence is low in a one on one knife fight.. but that’s the issue. If I am there I screwed up. Then i’ll do all I can. It places a premium on being in shape and strong. No such thing as a fair fight either. That’s the movies.

I fenced foil in college for several years and have no problems with sticking anyone who needs it. I carry an assisted open Benchmade and a small backup and have practiced knife fighting on my own. Wish I’d been in saber but that was for shorter stronger guys. There’s an old movie about a knife fighter called Exposure with Peter Coyote filmed in old Brazil with one of the world’s best knife fighters as a coach, very entertaining and tips on knife fighting. I know the SEALS see the knife as extension of martial arts, different approach. I’m a lot older than any $@& that would try me with a knife but my reaction time is still good.

I’ve taken one knife class and it scared the hell out of me. No one wins in a knife fight, you’ll be cut up, slashed and lots of blood will spill. It takes near daily practice to get fluid with just the basic moves. If you are up against someone who knows what they’re doing you’ll not know what hit you.
I still well up when I see the new Red Dawn movie… they ruined such a great movie with that remake.
