45 degree AR sights: A question was asked on a Facebook AR-15 forum as to whether or not 45 degree offset sights were good or not. My own opinion was that no – they were more of a fad or “tacticool” than anything. Of course, I was attacked immediately which is why I rarely comment on these sites.
Sure – they have a use. My answer was too general I know but this was FB and I had no reason to invest my time into a complete answer. For a very specific use, they could be beneficial. For the average AR unless substantial training will be applied to this setup I don’t think it’s worth it.
Now – a high magnification scope mounted on an AR or any other weapon system doesn’t lend itself well to CQC. That is where these sights could come in handy. Beyond that – I’ll pass.

Meh…some people’s weapon choice is relative to their skill and what works for them…However….as long as they follow the 3 golden rules.
– The weapon is always loaded.
– Never point the weapon at anyone. (target or threats not included)
– Never put your finger on the trigger until ready to fire.
– See first rule.
In this case it was me that asked the question .. I’m trying to figure out the best config for an AR10. It’s a distance gun .. with good accuracy.. I have seen people carry a hyper accurate bolt gun on their kit and a CQB gun on their sling .. If you are not in a hide but moving that is pretty heavy .. carrying one that is adequate for both seems better. An accurate quick release mount for the glass and pop up backups seems a decent choice. The reticle and objective are so large that even folded down backups don’t fit or I’d zero and fold em. So now you are looking at a raised cantilever mount (scope is long as well). That affects stability and point of impact to a degree. Just getting ideas and playing around and looking for an effective combo… when I get a match up I’ll train it and see if it’s useful or awkward. My initial opinion was tacticrap… but I have not personally used them.. so I don’t know .. it’s just gut

I’ve never used them either but it seems to me that depending on what your main optic is, a secondary/backup or different use set of sites might make perfect sense…
I like to keep my systems very simple and straight fwd. I also have learned to refrain from commenting. After listening to a POD cast and commenting on the content and comments; my comments and my opinion were attacked in the same manner that the Left Wing Liberal groups attack anyone who does not agree with their opinion. So I have reduced the sites that I frequent.
Off set sight come out of three gun comps, other than for competition, no real tactical value. I will stick with co-witnessing. Those Facebook internet warriors will disagree of course. I have yet to see a Tier 1 level operators or SWAT officers for that fact using off-set sights. Why you say, because they use visible and IR lasers for those situations. So, back to off-set, there for competition, not real world application. We have other tools for the real world.

I looked at the IR laser from eotech.. $1400.0+ (has visible and ir laser in the unit).
AND you need night vision .. Monocular at least (PVS14 or PVS24 – $4-1$0K.
AND it has to be night time for that to be of benefit..

Generally you have shooter with different guns for different mission specifics right ?
Rifleman vs Sniper roles.. as well as different missions. Not that one guy can’t do both as far as skill set is concerned. For any engagement he’s likely to be one roll or the other… at a time anyway.
My premise was not to have to carry for both rolls but to be able to do both rolls effectively with one weapon, and the difference in optics makes that difficult ..
Maybe it should not be and i’ll stick with one or the other .. or carry both ..
just playin around at this point.

If we had endless money like .gov, right!!! On my personal gun, I run a red dot/ co-witness irons, and white light. Seem to work for me and I can hit steel at 600 yards using the red dot/ irons or go CQB.
3rd Man, Good words. Have seen the competition issue for myself. Real world, I have two rigs: one with Trijicon and one with Vortex Spitfire III both backed up with good quallity flip ups in case the flying monkeys show up. I don’t remember being worried about a co-witness when down-range. Hank is very correct about ‘simple!’
